Job Purpose

To lead and develop a shift based manufacturing team to deliver the range/scorecard of operational key performance indicators (KPI’s) and objectives aligned to the business needs.

Role Key Accountabilities

  • Area ownership: responsible for achieving results against the agreed set of KPIs with a shift to weekly perspective
  • Safety: ensure area compliance with all company and statutory regulations and standards- including regular audit and action closure. Undertake crisis /accident /near miss investigations effectively
  • Quality: ensure product is consistently produced within specification and in a food safe way that meets customer audit and COP requirements. Manage deviations, with appropriate QA support, to eliminate / reduce customer /consumer risk
  • Service: Ensure that the shift is service driven in its focus on the customer and delivery of the schedule
  • Cost: Meet budget requirements by being cost critical on waste, giveaway, total labour cost, output rates and people productivity. Identify and pursue cost improvement opportunities to underpin budget savings
  • Working cross-functionally to deliver the site objectives
  • Initiate and support Continuous Improvement projects


  • To visibly lead the Line Leader shift team to achieve their hourly/daily KPIs ensuring the shift management system flags and addresses variances to appropriate timescales
  • On an ongoing basis to use performance management tools effectively to maximise their engagement and motivation to deliver these KPIs (set objectives, communicate, feedback, review performance)
  • To support Manufacturing Lead with plan for improving employee engagement for the area team – aligned to other Area Leaders
  • Facilitates personal development plans for direct reports to meet both individual and business needs, and with right level of ownership from them
  • Supports succession planning and by identifying the next generation of Area and Line Leaders from within the shift population and provide opportunities for their development
  • Ensures standards of discipline across the shift are maintained and handles issues in line with company grievance and disciplinary policy
  • Administers positive attendance management protocols for direct reports
  • Manage performance of employees in line with the company’s policies


  • Ensures effective aligned communication within the shift and with other shifts and functions
  • Links the requirements for daily delivery back to the manufacturing vision in a way that is meaningful for the team
  • To promote teamwork and an inclusive environment so that all employees in the area feel involved and consistently treated in a fair way
  • Develops strong peer working relationships to promote daily collaboration and cross functional problem solving as the normal way of working- implement APT approach
  • Leads Line Leader’s to ensure shared responsibility for delivering all KPIs and targets
  • Ensures that the correct skills are in place across the area to meet production requirements effectively
  • Leading in a fast moving and constantly changing environment, balancing the demands of customers, management and staff.
  • Leadership of team members, responsible for the full range of line management activities including, training, manager’s development, discipline, performance management, communications, absence control, team leadership, motivation, materials, direct labour and Overheads within budget.
  • Achieving and beating area KPI’s and provision of accurate information within agree timescales to support this for effective decision making.
  • Role model and champion for good health & safety practise

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Experience in managing people including leading and developing a team
  • Have worked in a process FMCG environment
  • Can demonstrate a sound understanding of the manufacturing process
  • Be conversant with plant and process engineering to understand the nature of issues
  • Numeracy to understand costs and how to improve
  • Literacy – clear report writing
  • Analytical and problem solving skills for breakdowns / quality /waste issues
  • Basic PC skills to support communication, analysis and reporting


  • Educated to ILM Level 3 or equivalent in a related vocational subject
  • Previous experience of food manufacturing

  • Be able to self-manage and work flexibly with high positive energy levels
  • Effective visitor management on plant


Area Manager (LOH); Quality Manager

Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)

  • Operational efficiencies at or better than standards used in budget
  • Shift/daily financial reporting is accurate and timely
  • Development of direct reports and input into succession planning
  • Quality: Zero withdrawals/recalls and target complaints per million YoY improvement
  • Green every day Audit & GMP compliance
  • Leading and lagging safety leadership performance 

The results should be delivered by:

  • engaging, motivating and developing the manufacturing team with particular reference to their direct reports.
  • working as a team with their peers in other functions

Decision making authority & controls:

  • Responsible for staff selection within the recruitment process up to FLM level.
  • Manages staffing levels to agreed manning including the use of agency.
  • Disciplinary authority up to dismissal level.
  • Exercises professional judgement in relation to repair of equipment whilst maintaining duty of care responsibilities for quality, output and safe working
  • Has authority to suspend production at any time if any of the above conditions are being compromised
