Research Assistant (Food Product Development)

The National Centre for Food Manufacturing requires a Research Assistant to assist with trials and research projects to support our productive innovation services to business which includes support for new product and process development, consumer insight and sustainability. Ideally you will have a strong background in research in product innovation with a research interest in sensory science and consumer insights and ideally you will have with some industrial experience. You will be part of with the Food Insights and Sustainability (FISS) project team. The “Food Insights & Sustainability Initiative at NCFM” is seeking to link sensory and consumer surveys to NPD practice in innovative ways.  Supporting this exciting initiative will also be part of the job role’.

A satellite campus of the University of Lincoln, The National Centre for Food Manufacturing is a major resource for the UK’s food industry with over 250 major companies accessing courses, technical services and research.  Our clients include the major national and global food manufacturing businesses and leading supermarkets and we collaborate with many international partners and universities. The NCFM has outstanding sector-focused facilities, including a state-of-the-art food factory demonstrating cutting edge food automation. 

The post holder will be focused on helping businesses to identify and implement opportunities to innovate through the introduction of new and improved processes and products overseeing a range of projects with businesses from short term 1 or 2 day projects through to far more in-depth business partnered projects running over the course of a number of months / years  Blending capability in both product development and consumer insights and process development this role will deal with a wide range of food products, typically advancing the products and supporting the clients through scale-up activities toward the achievement of commercially viable and saleable end products. Building and managing consumer taste panels is a key aspect of the role and hence a sound understanding and sensory science and taste panel selection and management is essential.

The post is one of several posts being establish to secure the success of The  Greater Lincolnshire Agri-food Innovation Platform (GLAFIP) project, the background to which is provided below: 

GLAFIP will stimulate Agri-food technological innovations and provide underpinning support for the technical, economic and environmental performance of Greater Lincolnshire’s largest industry. Led by the University of Lincoln and supported by funding from the European Regional Development Agency, the project will deliver applied research, innovation, knowledge and demonstration activities. Food Manufacturing and Agri-food technology companies and their supply chains will be supported in developing and commercialising new innovative products, processes and services by fostering long-term partnerships between businesses and the research community. The project is a partnership between the Lincoln Institute of Agri-Food Technology (LIAT), the National Centre for Food Manufacturing (NCFM) and the Food Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre (FRPERC). LIAT and NCFM are Agri-food centres of the University of Lincoln. Based at Riseholme, the University’s farm and estate on the outskirts of Lincoln, LIAT co-ordinates activities across all the University’s Schools to provide an institution wide focus for Agri-food technology research. NCFM is based in Holbeach in South Lincolnshire and majors on innovation with the food manufacturing sector. A specialist research institute, FRPERC is part of the Grimsby Institute where their specialist research facilities are located. GLAFIP therefore creates a multicentre innovation hub that is ideally positioned to serve the needs of Greater Lincolnshire’s Food businesses.

The post holder will be based at Holbeach Campus but will need to work flexibly to deliver the projects outputs which will involve travelling to the premises of businesses, the University’s Lincoln and Riseholme Campuses.
