Job Description – Production Team Leader


Our Company is an expanding soft drinks producer and contract bottler based in Sunderland. We are currently seeking an experienced Production Team Leader to be responsible for the safe and efficient running of the plant and effective management of staff. Previous experience gained within a FMCG plant, in a food/production environment would be ideal.


  • Lead and motivate a team
  • Accountability for shift and day-based organisation, build organisational capability and principled use of performance management processes
  • Organise the team to ensure that the production plan is delivered on a daily basis
  • Ensure new starters are welcomed to the team and trained on job instructions
  • Effective supervision of staff including control of absence, lateness and other disciplinary matters
  • Effective utilisation of labour and equipment
  • Maintain training records and identify training needs
  • Coach and develop members of the team and promote a continuous improvement culture to increase performance and drive down costs
  • Conduct staff appraisals
  • Promote operational excellence and operating discipline, drive high standards to all areas of operations
  • Efficient control of raw materials and finished product to minimise waste where possible
  • Provide daily information on production efficiency, non-conformance and waste
  • Maintain all production areas in line with Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Maintain and control Quality Standards across all products
  • Audit all daily checks and ensure they are being carried out
  • Ensure all operating procedures are being adhered to
  • Ensure the safe efficient and cost-effective introduction of new products and equipment
  • Ensure that all production in the team is completed in a timely manner to cope with customer demand
  • Ensure that the team complies with the Company’s health and safety and quality procedures
  • Practice continuous improvement in communication at all levels
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards for the area of responsibility
  • Liaise with other departments where necessary to ensure that the business needs and priorities are met
  • Consider and implement solutions to problems as and when they arise
  • Oversee shift changes to keep production to a maximum
  • Lead change, identify and drive change to positively impact the production area
  • Other additional tasks which may be required from time to time as dictated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the company

Essential skills required

  • Previous experience of leading a team, ideally in the FMCG
  • Continuous Improvement mind set, focused on daily search for areas to improve (efficiencies and cost reduction)
  • Flexibility with working hours
  • Effective communication skills (both talking and listening)
  • Self-motivated, able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to solve problems
  • Decisive, proactive
  • Good delegation and inspection, able to instruct and follow up on requests from Senior Management
  • Basic food hygiene qualification

We run a 24-hour operation, working on an 8-hour, 3 shift system
