Location:  Belfast

Type of role: Full Time, Permanent

Reporting to: Manufacturing Front Line Manager

 

Hovis Limited is a vertically integrated baking and flour milling business currently operated by The Gores Group as part of a stand-alone joint venture. The Company was created in April 2014 to help release new investment to upgrade its operational infrastructure and reinvigorate the Hovis brand, building on its rich heritage.

Nish Kankiwala our CEO brings a wealth of commercial and marketing experience from previous roles with Unilever, Pepsico and Burger King. 

Hovis Ireland operates from its Belfast site and is focused on developing the Hovis brand on the island of Ireland in line with Hovis Group strategy.  We produce a range of both branded and own label bread and morning goods products which are sold across Ireland and beyond.  An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Bakery Apprentice to join our Manufacturing team at the Belfast site.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Bakery Apprentice to join our Manufacturing team at the Belfast site.

ROLE PURPOSE: 

To learn and support the bakery process at Hovis Belfast whilst obtaining City & Guilds Level 2 & Level 3 diploma for Proficiency in Baking Industry Skills on a two and a half day release basis.

  • Bakery apprenticeship
  • 3 year course with 2 year study release to Belfast MET College
  • Work based training 2 days per week on site at Hovis Belfast during term times

Structure

Apprentice to attend Belfast MET 2.5 days per week during term times (September - June). Working two days per week on site and 5 days when not in college.

Year 1

  • Attend Belfast MET and study Level 2 Proficiency in Bakery Industry Skills
  • Work based learning across the bakery process

Year 2

  • Attend Belfast MET and study City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Bakery Industry Skills
  • Work based learning across the bakery process

Year 3

  • Work based learning across the bakery process
  • Short courses throughout the year

Essential Criteria:

  • 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above including Mathematics and English Language
  • A keen interest in food manufacturing and baking
  • Willing to be flexible in work patterns

Responsibilities:

At recruitment stage/1st Year:

  • To communicate effectively with assessor, tutors and immediate team members
  • To enjoy working as part of a team and other apprentice/ students feeding back assignment/ work progress
  • To be willing to take on new tasks and procedures within the work environment and complete work and assignments to agreed timelines
  • To learn problem-solving techniques
  • To follow instructions with reference to a superior when necessary
  • To plan and organise daily tasks and assignments
  • To learn the baking process to understand the kit and its functionality in bread production
  • Have regular sessions with on site mentor

At 18 months’ in the role:

  • To communicate effectively with assessor, tutors, immediate team members, and other engineering/ manufacturing departments
  • To enjoy working as part of team and “buddy” other operatives
  • To feedback improvements on new tasks and procedures within the work environment and help to implement them
  • Understand KPI’s and drive performance
  • To apply problem-solving techniques
  • To follow instructions without reference to a superior on most occasions and only when necessary
  • To plan and organise weekly tasks and assignments

More than 2 years in the role:

  • To communicate effectively with immediate team members, all other departments within the site and contractors/ suppliers.
  • To contribute to achievement of team objectives.
  • To set up new procedures, obtain feedback for improvements,  implement them and review success
  • To follow instructions without reference to a superior on all occasions (excluding exceptional circumstances)
  • To plan and organise monthly tasks and projects
  • To complete work based projects which drive improvements/savings

Other Responsibilities:

  • To attend college and pass module related coursework and exams.
  • To conduct yourself in a safe and diligent manner and comply with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Uphold and promote company policies and procedures, promoting those specifically to your area of work, including Equality and Diversity.
  • Keep up to date, so far as necessary, for the efficient executing of your job, with new legislation, procedures and techniques.
  • To be conversant with and participate in activities and developments relevant to the post.
  • To maintain strict confidentiality and discretion at all times.
  • To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with the post.
