This is an exciting opportunity to join an International Food Manufacturer who specialise within the UK Food industry, with multiple business units across the UK supporting various category specific clients they are looking to professionalise their collective approach to Health and Safety and enhance the team. This new role as Head of HSE will be centrally located in the Midlands but you will be expected to visit other facilities to consult the management team in HSE best practise. As the companies Head of HSE you will be responsible for managing Health & Safety processes and ensuring compliance within the company. This will include developing and documenting Health & Safety systems and ensuring adherence at all sites through hands-on auditing. You will have responsibility for the company’s Quality & Environmental Systems, controlling, documenting and updating the policies and procedures.

Main Responsibilities of the Head of HSE:

  • Being up to date with new legislation & maintaining a working knowledge of all Health & Safety Executive (HSE) legislation & any developments that affect the industry
  • To ensure ongoing compliance to EH&S regulatory requirements
  • To provide a safe working environment for all employees & contractors
  • Ensuring that employers, workers & contractors comply with safety legislation & that safety policies & practices are adopted & adhered to
  • Promoting a Health & Safety aware culture throughout the company 
  • Carrying out risk assessments identification of risk reduction measures, residual risk calculation, prioritisation of risk reduction measures, the evaluation of the effectiveness of the measures
  • Developing & maintaining the Site EH&S improvement plan, monitoring & reporting the close out of actions
  • Implementation & verification of risk reduction measures according to prioritised improvement plan
  • Procedures to ensure that accidents ,incidents, near misses & dangerous occurrences are reported, investigated & analysed & that necessary preventive measures are taken
  • Non-routine inspections shall be carried out to investigate serious complaints, serious accidents & near misses, incidents & occurrences of non-compliance
  • Outlining safe operational procedures which identify & take account of all relevant hazards
  • Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies & procedures are being properly implemented & adhered to
  • Developing & delivering training to staff & management in core safety subjects, health & safety issues, risks, specialist health & safety areas

What we are looking for from our new role as Head of HSE

  • Postgraduate qualification in occupational health & safety
  • Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health
  • To hold a National Examination Board in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH) Diploma
  • Preferable COSHH qualified
  • Be familiar with Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
  • Experience of working within a Food/FMCG manufacturing environment
  • Currently working in a Health & Safety position
  • Excellent knowledge & understanding of a production setting & the part Health & Safety plays within the environment
  • Thorough understanding of OHSAS 18001 standard, proven track record on implementation of these
  • Ability to work independently & on own initiative with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication, analytical & problem solving abilities
  • High level of competence in internal & external auditing
  • Computer Literate – Microsoft Word, Excel & Power point, SAP ideally
