The University of Greenwich is a London-based university, with 3 campuses spread over South-East London and North Kent. The university dates back to 1890, gaining full university status in 1992.
Medway campus, where food and nutrition related degrees are studied, is situated on a former Royal Navy shore base. The campus, being located in Kent, has had up to £50m worth of investment since 1996 with new laboratories and research facilities benefiting students of all courses. Medway campus prides itself in its Drill Hall Library, filled with books, computers, study areas and teaching rooms. The campus, along with its educational facilities, is filled with social and leisure areas for students to enjoy. There is an on-campus bar, a restaurant, café, general shop, sports hall and gym for both day and night time leisure activities.
The Students’ Union is a central location for most students attending Greenwich University, a place to relax during the day and wind down at night. The Medway pub, Coopers, is at the heart of campus. The traditional looking British pub serves food and drink throughout the day, with seating, pool tables and TV’s to cover all demands. Coopers have a different event each night, suiting all interests throughout the week. Tuesday nights for example has a live music act; whilst Thursday is comedy night and Friday is the ‘Medway mash-up’ with DJ’s providing entertainment all night.
There are multiple clubs and societies for students at Greenwich University to enjoy, whether this is through the University of Greenwich Students’ Union or Greenwich and Kent Students’ Union Together, the latter being based on the Medway Campus. Sports facilities across each campus include outdoors sports pitches, courts for badminton and tennis and gym areas for students to train in. Greenwich and Kent Union Clubs include Football, Netball, Rowing and Futsal to name a few.
Life in Greenwich
Greenwich, on the outskirts of Kent and districts of London, traces back to the Georgian and Victorian periods. Greenwich market has lined the town’s streets since the 14th century, setting a great tradition for residents, students and tourists to explore. There are two train stations within Greenwich town with services connecting to London, Gillingham and Dartford. In terms of football, Kent’s highest ranked team is Gillingham F.C who plays in Football League One. Cricket is a highly popular sport within the county, with Kent Cricket Club playing at the St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.
Outside of campus, just a train ride away, is the bustling city of London. The capitals clubbing scene covers all interests, with different events for students every night. Comedy is also huge within the city, with Comedy Stores often bringing big names to the stage. London is also filled with culinary delights of all cuisines, whether chain restaurants or independent you are bound to find something to take your fancy. London’s West End has over 50 theatres to choose between, showing both blockbuster and small independent productions. In addition, London also hosts many concerts, festivals and parades for all tourists and inhabitants to enjoy. Capital FM’s Party in the Park is a yearly music festival hosted in July. It is currently Europe’s biggest one-day pop event, with people coming from multiple countries to enjoy the occasion.
Food degrees at Greenwich University
The University of Greenwich has various food related degrees, suiting the needs of both undergraduates and postgraduates. For undergraduates, the university has a Human Nutrition BSc Honours course, which is taught for either 3 or 4 years as a sandwich degree. Greenwich University is one of the leading institutions for the study of nutrition, putting students in a great place to maintain a degree in the food and nutrition area. This specific degree focuses on the relationship between nutrition, health and disease brought together through food, with students studying the fundamental science of nutrition.
