Andrew Fitzmaurice is Managing Director of specialist food recruitment company MorePeople. We caught up with him to get to know him better and see if he has any top tips to share with recruiters and candidates...
How long have you worked in food recruitment?
This is my tenth year in food recruitment. My 15th in recruitment in total.
What do you love most about working in food recruitment?
The variety of the jobs, people, companies and products is awesome. I love the fact that everything we are involved in is so tangible – you see it on the shelves and you eat it every day – it’s inspiring to be a part of this industry
What’s the best piece of advice you could give to a candidate?
To be open minded and to always ask questions. It’ true for everyone that ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. I think that this can lead to missed opportunities. The strength and depth of our network means that we are always able to learn and benefit from the experiences of those around us – it’s what makes this job interesting, fun and ever changing – and we are always on hand to pass on this shared wisdom. Recruiters are great at asking questions and encouraging candidates to think outside the box – you never know what great opportunities and businesses are out there unless you question and keep an open mind.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give to an employer?
Find a great recruitment partner and invest time in the relationship with them. All recruitment companies aren’t created equal; nor are all client/recruiter relations. A great recruitment partner can represent your brand and solve all manner of problems with candidates who are culturally aligned to your business. The market is competitive when it comes to top talent and you will get the best access to those people if you invest time in your recruiter relationship. If your recruiter hasn’t been to site, got to know the culture and the personalities then how can they effectively represent your business and find you the best people? A recruiter who is passionate about your business will go the extra mile every time.
What’s the most important issue that will affect recruitment within food & drink over the coming years?
The challenges of population growth, provenance, food safety, obesity, food miles, carbon emissions and the war on plastic are all massive issues. Where do you start?
We also live in a world with changing consumer habits – in terms of how people shop, what they eat and where they shop. No Q&A would be complete without mention of the B word or talking about the challenges of labour. Every generation has its challenges and probably believes that they are bigger than their forbears had to deal with. Of course that isn’t true. Change is the constant and that is what makes this job fun. Roll with the punches and tackle each challenge head on
What is your favourite food?
Everything! Sushi. Blueberries. Cadburys Oreo chocolate!
Tell us one thing about you that your colleagues don’t know.
I’ve been here ten years. They probably know all my stories! Before university I was offered a place with the RAF to become a fighter pilot.
