Located in the heart of the North West, the University of Central Lancashire is the perfect location for students to study and socialise. The University of Central Lancashire is a public university, founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. The university has over 32,000 students, who are offered the choice of 500 undergraduate and 200 plus postgraduate courses. Most of these courses, including food related studies are based at the main Campus, in the city of Preston. This Campus is a 10-minute walk from the main shops in the city centre, close to the City train station and has cycle routes connecting students between the Campus and the City. 

With easy accessibility and transport links, the University of Central Lancashire has all the right ingredients to make a brilliant University. There are three major international airports within half an hour distance from Preston, supporting the needs of International students studying at the University.

The city of Preston in Lancashire, has an estimated population of 13,000 all of whom love the feel of the traditional docks and marina in the history filled town. Retail is a major contributor to Preston’s economy, with two shopping centres in the city. The first being Fishergate shopping centre, which is home to some of the major high street and department stores, including Debenhams, Starbucks and TK Maxx. Secondly is St George’s Shopping Centre, taking visitors back to the conventional roots, which has been in use since the 1960’s. Whether on a student budget or wishing to splash out, Preston suits the needs of all.

Along with the usual popular restaurants, Preston is filled with multiple independent businesses serving high quality fresh food on a daily basis. Visitors have the choice between farm shops to award winning Michelin Starred restaurants. For the food and drink students, there is no doubt you will be faced with the wonderful Merchant of Houghton Farmers Market when visiting Preston, Lancashire showing off the fresh local produce available.

Not so far away from Preston, is Blackpool, Lancashire that is seen as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Britain. The seaside resort is blackpool towersituated only half an hour away from Preston, being the perfect place for both residents and students to visit during the weekends and holidays. Blackpool has an award winning zoo, the Pleasure Beach Resort, which is filled with exciting rides, as well as the famous Blackpool Tower.

Preston is also home to Preston North End Football Club, who has a big fan base both in and around the city of Preston. The football club were one of the founder members of the Football League, further expressing the traditions that began in the town. The football club bring home and away fans from all over, with low-priced tickets bringing in students and visitors to the city.

Student Life at the University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire provides students with a huge Students’ Union, holding over 1,400 people on club nights. This social area has a bar, ‘Source’, which is open 7 days a week during term times for students to relax and socialise with friends after a day of study. The Union also hosts a club event, ’53 Degrees’, which often has well known musical acts performing for students. Having an accessible Students’ Union gives students a cheap, easy place to go during the weeks without having to leave the campus life.

The University of Central Lancashire Students’ Union, along with its nightlife, runs over 35 sports clubs for students of all abilities. Many of these clubs train weekly in the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre, preparing for both competitive and friendly matches. The University also has a state-of-the-art outdoor sports arena, opened in 2000, located only 2 miles away from the main campus. Over £12 million was spent perfecting the UCLan Sports Arena, which now provides facilities for Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball, Tennis and even Cycling. In addition, the arena has an eight-lane athletics arena, which is used not only by the University but the community also.

Food degrees at the University of Central Lancashire

The University has a Nutrition and Food Sciences MSc postgraduate course on offer for its students interested in going into the food and drink industry. The course is taught for 1 year full time, or 2 years if students which to study whilst working or gaining further experience. This specific course is aimed at students who have already studied the core disciplines in relation to nutrition and food science, with the intention of furthering the knowledge and quality of the student. 

This postgraduate course consists of core modules, including topics such as advanced human nutrition, as well as giving students the job of undergoing a research project into their food interest. Students are also given the option of choosing selected modules, making the course specific to each individual. The university also has top of the range Biological Science Laboratories available to students when being taught by professional world-class lecturers.
