The purpose of this job is to assist the Head of Microbiology R&D in achieving the company’s laboratory and production R&D/QA objectives. This will mean designing and carrying out complex experiments with Cat 2 pathogens, phages and food samples; establishing QC protocols; planning shelf life studies; and optimising lab scale production protocols.
The holder of the post will also be expected to assume responsibilities for health and safety issues, management of a research budget and administration. The job holder will be capable of working on his/her own initiative as part of a small R&D team and have good communication and organisational skills, as well as the requisite scientific knowledge, skills and experience.

Technical requirements (skills and experience);

Master of Science degree or Doctorate or equivalent experience in Life Science.
3-4 years of experience in a (food) microbiological sciences laboratory (preferably in assay development in a commercial setting) or in a ISO accredited lab. Familiarity with all the necessary analytical techniques and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
Familiarity with development and production of biological reagents and Production Quality Assurance.
High level of competence in working and maintaining complex scientific instrumentation.
Good and proven organisational skills.
Experience in the use of phages (enumeration and propagation techniques etc.) would be an advantage.

A well motivated and ambitious person for a medium term career development.
Ability to take full responsibility for a project (research or small scale production).
Strict laboratory discipline is of the essence, including an extremely systematic approach to investigation areas.
Reasonable flexibility to vary working hours as experimental design or other tasks may demand.
Initially no requirement to work outside the laboratory but the job may offer opportunities in the future to work from time to time at customer sites (e.g. supporting Beta trials) and at planned production sites.
Computer literacy (MS Office etc.) is essential.
